Sunnylands Children’s Home
Sunnylands Children’s Home was established in Wollongbar, Northern NSW in 1955 by a Mr Thomas Agst who was of Lutheran and Presbyterian background. The Home was once a farm which continued to operate as a training farm for the children in care, maintaining dairy cows and orchards for training and educational purposes. The Home’s mission was to provide accommodation for children needing temporary or permanent care. The Home accommodated on average between twelve and fifteen boys a year up to its closure in 1997. However, towards the final years of its operation, the Home held approximately 70 children in care. Most of the children in care came from the local area, with 60% being male and 40% male.
