Chevalier College

Chevalier College is an independent Catholic school established by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) in 1946 as a boarding and day school. It is situated in Burradoo, Bowral in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The College fully amalgamated with the Dominican Elm Court Girls School in 1977 to cater for both girls and boys and it ceased being a boarding school in 2003. The College has nowadays approximately 900 students from Years 7 to 12.

The College like many other private schools around Australian has been involved in allegations of physical and sexual abuse by former members of its teaching staff. Two former perpetrators are Father Anthony Caruana and lay teacher Brian Napper. Father Anthony “Tony” Caruana was a former dormitory manager, rugby coach and band teacher at the College who was charged by NSW police in 2019 with indecently assaulting five children aged 12 to 15 between 1982 and 1988. The arrest came as a result of Strike Force Caber, which was established by the NSW Police Force in July 2018 to investigate allegations of child sexual abuse at the boarding house in the 1980s. Brian Walter Napper was a former teacher at Chevalier College teacher between 1978 to 1992. In 2010, he was charged with sexually assaulting three teenage boys more than 20 years ago, attacking one at a cadet camp, another in the teacher’s bedroom, and the last boy at his home. The assaults occurred in March 1983, October 1989, and between June to September 1991. In 2011, Brian Napper was convicted of two charges of sexual assault and one charge of aggravated indecent assault after pleading guilty to all three counts. He was sentenced to 18 months in jail which included a non-parole period of eight months.

Moody Law has in the past represented and is still representing clients who were sexually abused by members of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.
