Ballarat Reception Centre
The Ballarat Reception Centre (originally the Ballarat Orphanage Boys’ Hostel) was opened by the Victorian Government in 1961 and closed in 1982. The Centre changed its name in 1964 to ‘Warrawee’ and it looked after various groups of children including state wards just admitted to the Victorian Department of Social Welfare, children on protection applications awaiting court hearings, and children who were not wards of the state but who were just temporarily placed overnight by Victoria Police.
The Centre initially had 15 to 18 children who were waiting for a placement, with that number growing to 55 by the end of June 1962. Throughout its operation it was reported that the Centre was nearly always full, placing stress on its resources.
Moody Law has in the past represented clients who have made allegations of sexual and physical abuse against the State of Victoria whilst placed in a state government institution.
